The California Redemption Machine is both a play on the ‘redemption value’ associated with recycling and the search for personal value and purpose.  Each gumball features a religious symbol from various parts of the world and historical time frames.  More arcane symbols of ancient Egypt and Pacific Island Nations commingle with the worlds’ ‘major’ contemporary religions of Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity and Islam.  Etched on the reverse can be seen the phrases “SORRY, TRY AGAIN” or “LO SIENTO.  TRATA OTRA VES.”   A select few gumballs, however, feature a US dollar sign accompanied by the words “YOU ARE REDEEMED” on the reverse.
