Beyond the Age of Reason brings together a diverse group of artists who contemplate how faith meshes with contemporary life, the role of ritual and symbolism, and the metamorphosis of traditional symbols as they become immersed in popular culture.
Many of these works were difficult to obtain, and we are thrilled that they made it into the show. Wayne Martin Belger’s piece, for example, has never before been shown, but it is prominently featured in the most recent edition of Smithsonian Magazine. We snagged it between his work with the Smithsonian Institute and the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C. Click on the following link to learn more about Wayne’s project, “Us and Them.”
We were also excited to acquire Eleanor Antin’s work (seen above) and it quickly became the lynch pin of the exhibition. Using the theme of Roman Allegories, she has recontextualized Ancient Rome in Southern California, so this series has an element of the absurd while delivering timeless truths. She also is busily scheduling a tour of her latest project, which will travel to some of the most significant museums in the nation, beginning with LA County Museum of Art.
There are 50 works of art in “Beyond the Age of Reason,” ranging from two historic Michelangelo sculptures to a Zoot Suit (Ruben Ochoa) made with blown glass. This exhibition features some of the most exciting work being produced in the region; San Diego artists alongside artists from Los Angeles, Tijuana, San Francisco and beyond.
The positive responses since the show opened on September 1st have been overwhelming. Two articles have already been written about it with a third soon to be published by Lonnie Hewitt for the La Jolla Light. You can check them out at the following links:
